Faced by the prospect of bringing up her baby on her own, Berris Martindale agrees to a proposition put to her by her ex-boss, Dr. Elliott Manley. He will marry her and bring up the child as his own, if she will make a home for his sister, Dympna, who is being discharged from a psychiatric hospital. Berris decides to accept, but it is only after she meets Dympna that she realizes she has taken on frightening responsibilities.
