Still. The East End Photographs' zeigt Landschaftsfotografien aus Long Island, New York. In ihrer Nachdenklichkeit und Transzendenz führen uns diese Bilder den Wert einer von Licht und Kontur bestimmten Natur vor Augen. Chengs Landschaftsaufnahmen entstanden durch eine Verschiebung der Fokalebene in der Kamera, um auf kaum merkliche und doch ausgesprochen emotionale Weise eine poetische Interpretation der Landschaft zu schaffen, die ihre Schönheit und Kraft einem Gefühl für Farbe und Bewegung verdankt. So entstand eine neue Sichtweise auf die Landschaft von Long Island, die schon so viele Künstler inspiriert hat. Durch die Verschiebung der Fokalebene konnte Cheng das, was er sah, neu definieren, die Wirklichkeit um/definieren und so gänzlich offene Bilder schaffen. Seeking to evoke a mood rather than capture the minute visual details of the landscape, Cheng shifts the focus plane within his camera to create scenes that are deliberately blurred. Poetic, personal interpretations of a landscape that has inspired many artists, Cheng’s photographs are dominated by intense color and a gentle abstraction. The horizon, the sea, the sand and the beach grass of Long Island all make their appearances, but in abstracted, hazy, dreamlike forms, inviting the viewer to share Cheng’s personal connection with the landscape.
