the long version

In a remote part of Polynesia, Richard and Rachel throw themselves into the very heart of the Western development effort. As island tensions mount, Richard becomes caught between tribal disagreements and Rachel's growing reluctance to interfere. Memory also begins to play tricks on him, taking him back to his childhood and fraught flight from Kenya. The colonial past merges with the post-colonial present, shaking his idealism and bringing unwanted revelations.
