the long version

A summer visit to Washington, D.C., turns into adventure and mayhem when Rose Doolittle witnesses the kidnapping of Percy Quince Clamdollar, 13-year-old son of the U. S. President. What the White House won’t tell the press is that the ransom is the original U. S. Constitution. Dismissed by the adults in charge of the case, 12-year-old Rose makes friends with Samova Dossarian, a violin prodigy, and Everett “Keybo” Stokes, a street-smart African American kid with uncanny computer knowledge. With help from a Native American ghost who died 900 years ago, Rose and her friends find Peek captive on a James River plantation, but get caught themselves. Norwood Van Cleef, the leader, releases Rose, but charges her with the heavy task of telling the President he has two days to hand over the Constitution or his son will die. Rose will be the messenger for both sides. Rose will carry the Constitution out of Washington and hand it personally to Van Cleef’s representative. With the symbol of American freedom hanging in the balance, Rose must deliver a convincing argument and carry out her duty flawlessly. Fearful but trusting her Bear medicine, Rose steels herself for the task, unaware that the biggest surprise, and the most deadly, awaits her return to the capital.
