They helped to maintain the everyday life for which Britain's military men were fighting. WE all think we know what happened in Britain during the Second World War. There was the blackout, the Blitz, the shortages and the rationing. There was the Home Guard, the ARP [Air Raid Precautions] men and women, the firefighters, and there were hundreds of thousands of women suddenly thrust into jobs previously thought only doable by men.
