Hendry Brown was reputed to be a "hanging judge" and when he came to Hagarstown the citizens soon discovered it was no idle rumour. But it was here that the judge was to make his greatest mistake when he sentenced Custer Madden to death for horse theft. Madden's cousin was the notorious two-gun lawyer, big Lee Madden, who arrived in Hagarstown but one day before the hanging was to take place. However, Lee was a man of action and resource, and using every trick of the law book and his incredibly swift draw, he soon had the measure of the hanging judge and the US marshall, Danver Potter.
