The author examines the achievement of suspense in a group of Oedipus plays ranging from the ancient times through the 20th century. What happens when modern dramatists choose ancient myth as their subject-matter? How can they achieve suspense when the audience is already familiar with the plot? Through close textual interpretation of eight plays, Stalo Monti-Pouagare compares the different techniques that each dramatist uses to create suspense in the audience.
