The sheriff realizes that she is being stalked by a stranger who looks vaguely familiar. She is initially surprised to discover that the stalker was once a colleague of hers in an Albany law firm, and then shocked when he is found dead in a seedy Crooked Lake motel, his throat slashed. It quickly becomes apparent that several members of the Albany legal establishment, not to mention an expensive call girl, might have killed him. The case takes several strange turns before coming to a sudden and wholly unexpected conclusion.
