the long version

This action-packed true story details the adventures of six teenagers who, for 16 days and nights in the summer of 1957, drifted 385 miles down the Alabama River from Montgomery to Mobile on a 10x12 foot raft they built from scrap lumber and discarded oil drums. Using little more than push poles and a crude rudder, the teenagers found themselves at the mercy of the sometimes treacherous, sometimes gentle river. The author, Buddy Estes, was one of those six who made the raft trip that captured the imagination of the entire state of Alabama through newspaper, TV, and radio coverage. The story is a modern-day Tome Sawyer / Huckleberry Finn type narrative that appeals to the imagination of both boys and girls, ages 8 to 18, as well as adults who can relate to the adventurous spirit of youth. It is filled with suspense, danger, humor, history, legendary Indian stories, and alligators in the night.
