"Powder and dust" is the 2nd story in a trilogy. The story begins November 12, 1918 and ends exactly year later: the first year of Polish independence as seen from the perspective of the denizens of Sosnowiec. The alluring widow of the murdered Alojzy Korzeniec, who is also an author of sentimental novels tries to bring the timid editor of the local newspaper in front of the altar. Meanwhile, the murderer of Alojzy Korzeniec is still at large, and is keeping an eye on the next victim -- or rather, the next two.
