the long version

Dorothy "Dot" Davidson visits Mrs. Harrison out in the country while her doctor father sees a patient. Mrs. Harrison is having an auction sale, and while watching it, Dot falls in love with a dog who is about to be sold and wants to buy him. Although cannot bid higher than the 20¢ she has, Mrs. Harrison gifts her the dog, and she names him Dash. She also takes home a peacock from Mrs. Harrison and names it Peeky. Dot loves her two new pets, but soon has to go to Vermont to stay with her Aunt Betty and Uncle Jack on their maple sugar farm because her mother requires medical attention for a lingering illness. Dot enjoys helping Uncle Jack with the syrup until she gets sick from eating too much maple sugar. Later, Dot helps Aunt Betty sell maple sugar out at the main road, but when a man leaves with a jar of sugar he hasn't paid for, Dot feels responsible and begins watching for the strange man. She finally spots him and falls asleep while waiting for him in his car. When she wakes up, the man has driven hundreds of miles!
