"Proclaiming Harmony is a translation of the Chinese vernacular romance Xuanhe yishe (literally, Neglected events of the Reign Period "Proclaiming Harmony"). It is a tale of cowardace, passion, and intrigue set in the final days of the Northern Song dynasty (A.D. 960-1127) and written by an anonymous author in southern China perhaps one hundred fifty or two hundred years later. ... It contains an early and very brief version of the story of Song Jiang and his merry band of robbers, who rose up against the corrupt rulers of the crumbling dynasty and whose escapades are sung in that most popular of all Chinese novels, Water Margin (also known in English under the titles Outlaws of the Marsh and All Men Are Brothers)."
