Paris, 1909. A city of deception, betrayal, and revenge.... Maud had left behind an unhappy childhood and the constraints of life in a small Northumberland town to study art at Lafond's famous Académie in Paris. Almost two years into her training, she has discovered that Paris eats money, paint and canvas. She has just one more cold Paris winter to get through, but her stock of bravery has all but run out. She takes a job as companion to Sylvie, but is unaware of Sylvie's addiction to opium as she gets drawn in to a world of elegant luxury.
