"This is the first thorough history and analysis of Realism in the 19th Century art from the 1830s to the 1880s when the Impressionist group broke up. The book begins with the origins of Realism at the start of the century and ends with the last phase of Realism after 1880. In addition to artists from England and France, the book includes artists from Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, and Italy. A distinctive feature is the coverage of prints and the graphic arts that played a crucial role in the development of realism, ranging from popular illustrations in magazines and books to painter's etchings and engravings.
