As Delia Pineda blossoms into womanhood, her struggles are complicated by her increasingly domineering - even tyrannical - older sister, Maria Elena. It is clear that Maria Elena and her parents share some secret, like an invisible cord linking them, from which Delia has been deliberately excluded. She is mystified, too, by her older, troubled cousin Justo, who arrives one day with little explanation to stay with her family. It seems that only by piecing together overheard conversations and furtive whispers will Delia be able to solve the puzzle of her own life.
