This manual presents an overview of the investigative and crime scene recording process with step-by-step guides for such specific crimes as homicide, rape, robbery, auto theft, and narcotics, and for juvenile investigations. Both the legal and the physical aspects of evidence, are presented. Admissibility of evidence, matters of privilege, the doctrine of reasonable doubt, triers of fact, and the exclusionary rule are covered. The handling of physical evidence is presented in chart form in addition to a narrative discussion. Laboratory analysis of impressions and imprints, hair, fibers, bloodstains, glass, and paint is described in nontechnical language. Specific investigation procedures are given for homicides, rapes, robberies, crimes against property, auto theft, fraudulent document investigations, narcotics investigations, and juvenile investigations. Using information available from local sources or state and national agencies to solve crimes is discussed. Case preparation guidelines are given, including legal rulings on competency of witnesses, use of physical and supporting evidence, legal rulings regarding use of confessions, and good case preparation.
