the long version

Women at War was written in 1943 to inform the Canadian public how their peacetime industrial economy had been transformed into a massive plant producing the products, materials and services required to support Canada’s war effort. In particular, it focuses on the roles that Canadian women were playing as part of this machine, as they took the places in factories of men who had gone off to war. It is clearly a piece of propaganda, designed to instill pride in the Canadian public. But it also provides an interesting picture of Canada’s war time activities at home, with excellent photos and stories of military weapons and equipment that was being produced. There are also some great advertisements which illustrate how support for Canada’s war effort was being promoted.
