Robert Roberts

Born in Charleston, South Carolina. From 1825 to 1827 he was the butler for Christopher Gore, Governor and Senator from Massachusetts. Earlier he had been a butler or manservant for Nathan Appleton. His book is the first of any kind written by an African American to have been published in the United States by a major publisher.
