John Mitchell Johnson is a lifelong resident of Kentucky, having been reared in the eastern coalfields. Though “Kudzu” draws heavily upon Johnson’s Appalachian background, the ordeals and experiences of coming-of-age artfully rendered in the book are universal and timeless.
